Lepton Incorporated's Internet Virtual Reality project is a push to make interactive virtual reality available to the public through the rapidly growing medium of the World Wide Web. Our hope is to provide the glue logic for publicly available components so that VR interaction can become as commonplace and easy to use as HTML viewers are today. All of the tools to construct such VR systems are already available in the forms of: Browsers, Viewers, Rendering Engines and Support Software.
We are currently in the most primitive "proof of concept" phase of this work, consisting of a redistributable 3D rendering engine (Bernie Roehl's Avril) reconfigured to act as a browser for 3D Image files, which may be downloaded through a common HTML browser (Netscape). Once this step is complete (hopefully by mid-April) we hope to form a partnership with a company which will providing more sophisticated rendering and interaction system.
The current software is in a "pre-alpha" state so don't expect too much of it. However it is available now and the bugs between it and our browser are being worked out at this time. While eventually we hope to support several virtual worlds, at the moment we have three examples available for testing. If you are so inclined, please have a look at them and send us your comments!
